Why Reducing Screen Time is the Secret to a Healthier Lifestyle

Let’s be honest: screens are everywhere.

Phones, TVs, laptops, tablets… they’ve become part of our everyday life here in Coventry. We work on them, chat to friends, watch our favourite shows, and even keep the kids entertained with them.

But have you ever stopped to wonder how much time you’re actually sitting still, staring at a screen?

Why It Matters

Our bodies were made to move, not sit all day. When we spend too long in front of screens, day after day, it starts to take a toll. Our muscles can weaken, our metabolism slows down, and we’re at higher risk for things like heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and even high blood sugar levels.

It sounds scary, but here’s the important thing to remember: it doesn’t have to stay that way.

You deserve to feel strong, healthy, and full of energy (and even small changes can make a big difference).

Simple Ways to Move More and Feel Better

The good news is, moving your body doesn’t have to mean sweating it out at the gym (unless you enjoy that!). It’s about fitting bits of movement into your day and having fun while you do it.

Here are some ideas for every age and stage:

For Babies and Toddlers

  • Gently move their arms and legs with baby exercises or baby yoga (it helps their muscles develop and can be lovely bonding time).

  • Put on music and dance around the living room with your toddler. No fancy moves required!

For Children

  • Bring back classic games like:

  • Hide and Seek.

  • What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?

  • I Spy.

  • Hot Potato.

  • Head out to Coventry’s parks for football, tag, or just running around and spotting wildlife.

  • On walks, count cars, colours, or even types of flowers you see.

For Teens and Adults

  • Pop on a favourite song and dance around for the length of the track.

  • Try a mini trampoline—bounce for a minute every half hour to break up sitting time.

  • Invest in a standing desk so sitting is no longer your default.

  • If you’re working from home, sneak in mini workouts:

  • Squat while waiting for the kettle to boil.

  • Do arm stretches with tins of beans.

  • March on the spot or throw a few playful punches if you’re feeling stressed.

For Everyone

  • When you’re watching TV, get up during ad breaks.

  • Walk up and down the stairs.

  • Do some sit-to-stand exercises.

  • Get outside for a walk in Coventry’s fresh air—even just 10 minutes can work wonders. Notice the sky, the trees, the sounds around you.

  • Time yourself walking around the block and see if you can beat your own record each week.

  • Try a new sport, hobby, or activity. You might surprise yourself with what you enjoy!

It’s Not About Perfection

Cutting down screen time isn’t about giving up things you love. It’s about creating balance and making sure your body and mind get what they need to thrive.
